Herb Chen, M.D., FACS, surgeon-in-chief and chair of the Department of Surgery, has been selected as the new editor-in-chief of American Journal of Surgery (AJS). The peer-reviewed journal, published by Elsevier publishing company, is designed for surgeons who perform abdominal, cancer, vascular, head and neck, breast, colorectal, and other forms of surgery. It is the official journal of seven major surgical societies.
Allan Ross, senior publisher at Elsevier, recently announced the selection, stating: “We believe Dr. Chen is the perfect choice to lead AJS, and brings with him a new vision and fresh perspectives on academic surgery.” After a brief transitional period of assistance from Kan Moore, AJS’s managing editor, Chen will begin as the editor-in-chief the first week of April.
Chen is chair of the Department of Surgery, the surgeon-in-chief of UAB Hospital and Health System, a professor of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering, and holds the Fay Fletcher Kerner Endowed Chair. Chen is affiliated with numerous associations and editorial boards, including: The Society for Clinical Surgery, and the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, Scientific American Surgery, The Oncologist, and six other editorial boards. He is an associate and section editor for Annals of Surgery, and the past president of the Association for Academic Surgery.
