Shawn Galin, Ph.D., professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine, is the senior faculty winner of the 2022 Dean’s Excellence Award in Teaching. He serves as the director of the Office of Standardized Patient Education (OSPE).
Galin began his teaching career in 1996. He has provided curriculum across the UAB Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry, Nursing, Health Professions, and Graduate School. In 2008, he was responsible for developing a course load around basic science and clinical aspects of human Endocrinology. The courses are highly regarded and respected amongst medical students in the Heersink School of Medicine.
Throughout his career, medical students have consistently acknowledged his outstanding teaching and leadership in the classroom. In 2014, Galin held the record for the greatest number of Argus Awards (four) given to a single educator in a given year, including the highly esteemed Caduceus Award for overall best educator in the pre-clinical medical school curriculum. Galin has collected an astounding 26 Argus Awards since being at UAB. Medical students distinguish Galin for his thorough preparation, warmth, clarity, and highly respected expertise.
As the Office of Standardized Patient Education director, Galin received grant funding for his advocacy to enhance LGBT health care competencies in medical students. He earned the prestigious UAB Lavender Award to recognize his work supporting diversity and humanism.
Galin earned his doctorate at UAB. He joined the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care in 2009 and is currently a professor.
