Shivani Malhotra, M.D., has been named the chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine’s Huntsville Regional Medical Campus. She began her role on May 1. Malhotra has served as the interim chair since October 2021 following the retirement of Marcia Chesebro, M.D.
"I feel privileged to witness the circle of life and be able to take care of patients of all ages,” Malhotra said. “Developing long-time, close relationships with patients along with opportunities for teaching residents and medical students is the most rewarding aspect of the job and makes me a better physician.”
“It is safe to say that Dr. Malhotra’s skill and level of expertise along with her ability to lead and manage her respective roles speak volumes as to the kind of physician and educator she is,” said Roger Smalligan, M.D., MPH, regional dean for the Huntsville campus. “Dr. Malhotra is a major asset to our institution and medical community across the nation. Without her knowledge and skill, our medical students and residents would not have the benefit of learning from such a seasoned and knowledgeable physician.”
After joining the Huntsville medical faculty in the Department of Family in 2016, Malhotra has served myriad leadership roles, including associate director of the Family Medicine Residency Program, director of the Family Medicine clerkship in Huntsville and chair of Family Medicine for the Huntsville Hospital Health System.
Malhotra is the medical director of the Madison County Jail Clinic and serves as physician chair and board member for North Alabama Medicaid Community Care. She’s also active in community service, including serving as physician chair and board members for Not One More Alabama, an organization supporting families who lives are affected by addiction.
A native of India, she completed her bachelor’s of medicine and surgery at Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India. She completed residency in the UAB Huntsville Family Medicine residency program in 2012.
Malhotra is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Medical Association of State of Alabama, the Medical Society of Madison County, the American Association of Physician of Indian Origin, the Alabama Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
