The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) is ranked No. 5 in the nation according to U.S. News and World Report 2022-2023 Best Hospitals rankings.
This is the first year that obstetrics and gynecology were combined as one specialty. After evaluating 233 hospitals across the U.S., UAB was listed at number five for Obstetrics & Gynecology, making it one of the highest rankings a specialty at UAB Medicine has received.
“I am incredibly proud of our department and the high level of quality health care that we provide to all women in the state of Alabama,” says Warner Huh, M.D., FACOG, FACS, professor and chair of the Department of OB/GYN. “This may be the highest ranking UAB has seen on the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list. It is a true testament to the expertise, commitment, and compassion of our department.”
The department’s ranking at number five makes it the highest ranked obstetrics and gynecology program in the Southeast region, as well as the highest ranked public institution.
In the past, UAB OB/GYN has seen consistently high rankings by U.S. News, specifically for gynecology. In 2021, UAB Medicine was ranked at No. 7 for Gynecology by U.S. News – the highest ranking the department had seen before this year.
When reviewing the top hospitals in obstetrics and gynecology, U.S. News looks at programs that see a large quantity of challenging patients for uterine, pelvic, ovarian, and cervical disease and procedures. An analysis of data in specific categories, such as high-risk patient volume, survival, patient experience, nurse staffing, and advanced clinical technologies, is also considered.
“We see a large volume of diverse patients at UAB, many that are high-risk in the areas of obstetrics and gynecology,” says Huh. “The exceptional care we are able to provide with our specialists and high-caliber teams allows us to quickly and effectively treat our patients while providing unmatched patient care.”
In addition to its No. 5 ranking, UAB OB/GYN received a top score of “Excellent” in numerous areas, including Advanced Technologies, Patient Services, and Nurse Staffing. It also received a score of “High Performing” in the area of Ovarian Cancer Surgery.
“This is a genuine team effort, and it’s an honor and privilege to be a part of this august group,” says Huh.
