Thomas D. DuBose, Jr., M.D., MACP, FASN, was honored with the 2023 Distinguished Alumnus Award during the Medical Alumni Association's 50th Annual Medical Alumni Weekend. This award honors individuals who have made a substantial contribution to medicine.
Originally from Gadsden, Alabama, DuBose completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Alabama and joined the University of Alabama School of Medicine entering class of 1966; graduating in 1970. He completed his internship training in Internal Medicine at University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.
DuBose has an extensive history of contributing to the medical profession and has held several leadership positions during his career. At Wake Forest School of Medicine, he served as the Tinsley R. Harrison professor, professor of physiology, and chair of Internal Medicine.
He was chief of Nephrology at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHSCH). He also served as chair of Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and vice-chair of Medicine at UTHSCH.
DuBose was elected to the Council of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and served as president of the ASN (2005-2006). He also served on the Board of Regents of the American College of Physicians and is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.
While serving as chair of Internal Medicine, he established the Tinsley R. Harrison Research Scholars program for residents in Internal Medicine. This remarkable program was designed to provide extensive research training for students for the duration of the IM Training Program.
He established several approaches to further expand the IM Residency Training Program. These methods were highly successful resulting in the expansion of the program and an increase in faculty diversity, promotion, and tenure.
In recognition of his career research and teaching accomplishments, DuBose was the recipient of the prestigious John P. Peter’s Award from the American Society of Nephrology in 2012. He has received other awards including the Donald W. Seldin, President’s Awards from the National Kidney Foundation, and the Distinguished Achievement Award by the Council on the Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease of the American Heart Association.
