Veena Antony, M.D., professor in the Department of Medicine's Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine, is the senior faculty winner of the Dean's Excellence Award in Research. Antony's research is focused on environmental and translational medicine, cystic fibrosis, pleural disease, and lung injury.
Antony's medical training began at Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, India. Following medical school, she progressed to an internship and residency at New York's Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center. After her Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship training at the University of Colorado's School of Medicine, Antony worked in Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, the Indiana University School of Medicine, and the University of Florida before beginning her work at UAB in 2010. Antony's experience and counsel have been praised by faculty as making the UAB Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine a division that is forward-thinking, inclusive, and supports the career development of all our faculty.
In 2020, the UAB Superfund Research Center was created, with Antony as its director. The center’s work addresses airborne environmental pollution with heavy metals and its impact on respiratory health and environmental degradation. The center consists of three biomedical projects and two environmental/engineering projects that focus on both human lung health and the health of the environment. All biomedical projects involve direct study of subjects from the affected area with a focus on COPD, asthma, and lower respiratory tract infections.
"Dr. Antony's research interests are remarkably broad and deep, and she has recognized global expertise in environmental and translational medicine, cystic fibrosis, pleural disease, and lung injury. Her academic record is exemplary with continuous funding since 1982 and serving as a National Institutes of Health reviewer since 1985," said Mark Dransfield, M.D., professor of Medicine and division director of the UAB Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine.
