The UAB Institute for Human Rights (IHR), along with co-sponsors from schools and colleges across UAB, is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement with a week of events on campus.
The Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion is excited to host an event, “A Conversation with the Hamiltons: Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement” in partnership with IHR’s week of events on Wednesday, Oct. 11 with a special guest speaker.
In an event open to all, Raegan Durant, M.D., associate dean of Diversity and Inclusion, will sit down with Herschell and Majella Hamilton, and Isaac C. Ravizee, Jr., M.D.
The Hamiltons are family members of Herschell Lee Hamilton, M.D., a Birmingham physician known as the “Battle Surgeon” and “Dog-Bite Doctor,” who provided crucial medical care to those injured during the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham.
Topics of conversation will include Hamilton’s life and practice, contributions to the Civil Rights Movement, and connections between the struggles of the 1960s and human rights campaigns today, especially as it relates to health equity.
The event is hosted in Wallace Tumor Institute Lobby from 4-5 p.m. RSVP here.
Light refreshments will be provided but seating will be limited. To request disability-related accommodations, please contact Mary Hiller mhiller@uab.edu.
