Amit Momaya, MD, associate professor and chief of Sports & Exercise Medicine in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Steven Brown, MD, associate professor and chief of Sports & Exercise Medicine in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, have reached a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first Alabama physicians to be included on the prestigious US Soccer Federation Preferred Provider List.

Amit Momaya, MDAmit Momaya, MDThe US Soccer Preferred Provider List features highly qualified medical professionals nationwide, serving as a trusted resource for soccer players seeking top-tier care in their state. Soccer players at all levels can benefit from Momaya and Brown’s extensive expertise, whether they are recovering from injury or seeking preventative care.

Momaya is renowned for his specialization in leg and knee injuries, particularly ACL reconstruction. He frequently performs the lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET) procedure, which provides greater stability to the knee by protecting it from rotational forces and reducing stress on the ACL graft—a critical intervention for soccer players, who are especially prone to these injuries.

“I am honored to be selected as a US Soccer preferred provider,” says Momaya. “US Soccer is primed for exponential growth over the next decade. We need the orthopedic and sports medicine innovations to keep pace. We enjoy keeping these soccer athletes healthy and helping them recover from injuries.”

Brown is a notable specialist in non-surgical orthopaedics, with a particular focus on lower extremity orthobiologics. He is highly regarded for his expertise in Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injection treatments, which have proven effective in promoting healing and reducing pain for various musculoskeletal conditions, especially those commonly found in soccer athletes.

Steven Brown, MDSteven Brown, MD"I am honored to be selected by the U.S. Soccer Federation as a preferred provider,” says Brown. “This recognition reflects UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine's unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality care to soccer athletes of all ages. I look forward to supporting the health, performance, and well-being of players at every level of the game."

In addition to their academic and clinical roles, Momaya and Brown serve as official team physicians for several prominent sports organizations, including the Birmingham Legion Football Club, Birmingham Legion Three Sparks (Women’s Team), Birmingham Bulls Hockey, and UAB Athletics. Alongside a comprehensive team from UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine, their involvement ensures that athletes receive premier medical care both on and off the field.
