William M. Geisler, M.D., MPH, professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, has been named the associate dean for Physician Scientist Development in the UAB School of Medicine.
In this role, Geisler is responsible for the oversight of the Physician Scientist Development Office (PSDO), created in 2015 to be a one-stop-shop for current and future physician scientists for access to research training opportunities, career advice, mentorship, education, grant writing guidance, and additional information on available resources to help further their careers. Geisler also partners with the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) to support the career development of current and future physician scientists at UAB.
"This appointment gives me the opportunity to help to support the development and success of the next generation of physician scientists,” Geisler said, “a group which is in dire need to help conduct research that will lead to advances in tests, treatments, and prevention strategies in healthcare. I am looking forward to doing what I can with my effort and resources to recruit, train, and retain more UAB trainees into the physician scientist pipeline.”
The Physician Scientist Development Office enacts departmental and institutional efforts across the Heersink School of Medicine and supports and enhances the training of UAB Clinician Scientists as they develop their careers as future leaders of academic medicine.
“Dr. Geisler has been a significant asset to our Physician Scientist Development Office,” said Craig Hoesley, senior associate dean for Medical Education. “Through his efforts, the office has expanded and enhanced training opportunities for students, residents, and faculty, further developing their careers as future leaders in academic medicine. I am proud of the foundation he has built within our school and look forward to seeing his continued success with our students and faculty as associate dean.”
Geisler earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in 1996 and completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan in 1999. He earned a master of public health degree in epidemiology from the University of Washington in 2000 and completed an infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Washington in 2002. Since 2021, Geisler served as the assistant dean for Physician Scientist Development in UAB Heersink School of Medicine.
