Dr. McGwin is vice chairman and professor in the UAB Department of Epidemiology and holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, where he currently serves as the associate director for the UAB Clinical Research Unit. Additionally, he holds secondary appointments with the UAB Department of Surgery and the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. McGwin is also director of advanced enterprise analytics for UAB Health System and the biostatistics, epidemiology, and research design component of the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science. Dr. McGwin has authored or coauthored over 450 peer-reviewed manuscripts, with an emphasis on the epidemiology of injury, aging, eye disease and vision impairment and systemic lupus erythematosus.
Dr. McGwin is an associate editor for the American Journal of Epidemiology and Accident Analysis and Prevention and regularly reviews manuscripts for more than 20 biomedical journals. He is a regular grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the Canadian Institute for Health Research, the Health Research Board of Ireland as well as other state, national, and international organizations. Dr. McGwin currently sits on data safety and monitoring boards for the NIH and the U.S. Department of Defense.
Dr. McGwin is also an expert in the design, implementation and evaluation of clinical data registries. In addition to overseeing the UAB Trauma and Burn Registry and the United States Eye Injury Registry, he has developed and/or manages registries in the areas of systemic lupus erythematosus and pediatric urology, among others. Dr. McGwin also works extensively with the National Trauma Data Bank of the American College of Surgeons, the National Burn Repository of the American Burn Association, the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Crashworthiness Data System. Dr. McGwin is the co-principal investigator for the Crash Investigation Research Engineering Network (CIREN) sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
