The UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences held an extremely successful 2018 Annual Clinical and Research Symposium at the Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort and Spa on May 18-19. This was the 19th year of the symposium and included resident, faculty, and featured lectures on glaucoma, IOL Calculations, and Toric Lenses.
The Alumni Sponsored Lecturer was Arthur J. Sit, M.D., Associate Professor and Clinical Practice Vice Chair in the Mayo Clinic Department of Ophthalmology. His research interests focus on aqueous humor dynamics, the variations in intraocular pressure, ocular biomechanics, the role of intracranial pressure in glaucoma, and novel technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. Sit gave two lectures titled “Aqueous Humor Dynamics – A Framework for Optimizing Glaucoma Therapy” and “IOP Variations and Why They Matter in Clinical Practice.”
Warren E. Hill, M.D., of East Valley Ophthalmology in Mesa, Arizona, served as the 2018 Helen Keller Lecturer. Hill has devoted the majority of his career to challenging anterior segment surgery and the mathematics of intraocular lens power calculations. His lecture presentations were titled “Improving IOL Power Selection” and “The Toric IOL: What You Need to Know.”
First-year residents completed poster presentations, while second and third-year residents presented talks on a variety of topics. The Lyn McMahan Awards, presented to one resident from each class and voted on by symposium attendees, were awarded to:
PGY - 2: Jeffrey Tapley, M.D., for his poster “Clinical Outcomes of a Phone Call in Lieu of Day One Exam Following Uncomplicated 25-gauge Vitrectomy Surgery”
