After a distinguished career, Dawn DeCarlo, O.D., Ph.D., MS, MSPH, is set to retire from the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and the UAB Center for Low Vision Rehabilitation. Her journey, marked by dedication and groundbreaking contributions, has left a lasting mark on the world of optometry.
DeCarlo's association with the UAB Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences began in 2005, and she ascended to the position of Professor in 2016. During her tenure, she demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing the field of low vision research and patient care. Her expertise has illuminated the complexities of this condition, leading to innovative treatment approaches, including Spark Therapeutics' LUXTURNA, the first FDA-approved gene therapy to treat genetic blindness in children. Her passion for improving patient lives has been a driving force behind the department's success.
Beyond her research, DeCarlo's impact extends to mentoring and advocating for countless trainees and colleagues. She has played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of aspiring optometrists and ophthalmologists. She has taught 3rd-year optometry along with 1st and 2nd-year ophthalmology residents and served as a clinic preceptor for the AIDB. Her wisdom, compassion, and dedication to the growth of others have left an enduring legacy within the department.
DeCarlo has been the heart and soul of the UAB Center for Low Vision and Rehabilitation, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie that has made UAB Callahan Eye a second home for many. Her leadership has been instrumental in creating an environment where curiosity and discovery thrive. DeCarlo has left this position in the capable hands of Marissa Locy, OD, who will be acting as Interim Director.
