UAB Ophthalmology research faculty members Cynthia Owsley, Ph.D., and Chris Girkin, M.D., have been awarded a $3.75 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for their project, "Implementing AI-based Glaucoma Screening within Federally Qualified Health Centers."
The study, active from Sept. 30, 2024, to Sept. 29, 2029, aims to evaluate a novel, cost-effective glaucoma screening approach using artificial intelligence in federally qualified health centers in underserved areas. The goal is to improve early detection of primary open-angle glaucoma and ensure timely follow-up care, particularly in regions with large Black populations.
