Dr. Mike Callahan performs a routine, comprehensive eye examVision insurance is beneficial to help your family maintain healthy eyes. Coverage varies depending on the insurance company that you are with, but most insurance plans offer benefits on an annual basis. As the end of the year approaches, it is important to evaluate your insurance coverage to make sure that you have taken advantage of all the benefits.

Get the Most from Your Vision Benefits

Typically, a vision insurance company will offer a maximum amount of benefits that can be used during the calendar year. Insurance is typically on a use-it-or-lose-it basis: you can use the benefits any time during the year, but you can’t roll the benefits over to the next year. So, you need to make sure that you schedule time for your eye exams before December 31st.

Use Up Your FSA Allotment

If your employer provides a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you can contribute pre-tax dollars into the account to be used for health care including eye care. This money can be used for out-of-pocket medical expenses, including prescription glasses and contact lenses, eye exams, some eye care products and certain eye procedures and surgeries. Be sure to ask your insurer which eye care items and services your private vision insurance or FSA covers. UAB Callahan Eye also offers a 15% discount to our patients on designer eyeglasses and sunglasses in the optical shops conveniently located in many of our clinics, though this discount cannot be paired with insurance.

Monitor Your Eye Health

An annual eye exam checks the overall health of your eye and will detect any changes in your field of vision. Our physicians look for early signs of eye conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration. Detecting and treating these eye diseases early is crucial to preventing significant vision loss. A comprehensive eye exam can also reveal things about your general health. By carefully examining your eyes, eye doctors may be able to spot diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other conditions. Using your vision benefits by the end of the year can give you peace of mind about your eye and general health.
