UAB Callahan Eye is excited to welcome Dr. Eric Sputh, MD, Dr. Michelle Langkawel, OD, Dr. Rob Tauscher, MD, Dr. Blythe Monheit, MD, and Dr. Danielle Isen, MD to its clinical faculty.
Dr. Sputh received his bachelor’s degree from DePauw University and his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed an internship in family medicine at Anderson Area Medical Center in Anderson, South Carolina, and his residency in ophthalmology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
Dr. Langkawel is a graduate of the Michigan State University. She received her optometry degree from Michigan College of Optometry before completing externships at Bain Eye Center and Eaton Rapids Optometry, both in Michigan.
Drs. Sputh and Langkawel are joining UAB Callahan Eye from North River Ophthalmology in Tuscaloosa, where they have built a thriving ophthalmic and optometric practice. This August, North River Ophthalmology will transition to Callahan as our newest clinic location. Both providers have provided comprehensive eye care to the Tuscaloosa community for years, and their experience will be great assets to our team.
Dr. Tauscher will join the department and Callahan team in October after completing his pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus fellowship at Duke University. A medical school graduate of Vanderbilt University’s School of Medicine, Tauscher completed a transitional year at PRMC and his residency in ophthalmology at Northwestern University.
Dr. Monheit will also join our team in October after spending the last 22 years as a glaucoma specialist in Texas. She received her medical degree from UAB’s School of Medicine before completing a transitional year at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. Upon completion of her ophthalmology residency and glaucoma fellowship at UAB, Monheit served as a clinical instructor of ophthalmology and glaucoma. We are excited to welcome her back to our team.
Dr. Isen is a graduate of the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. After receiving her medical degree from Midwestern University School of Medicine, she completed a post-doctoral corneal research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, followed by a preliminary internal medicine internship and neurology residency at the University of South Alabama in Mobile before joining the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences as a neuro-ophthalmology fellow. She will join our team as a faculty member upon completion of that fellowship this fall.
