The mission of the UAB LGBTQ Mental Health and Wellness Clinic is to provide culturally competent outpatient psychopharmacology and therapy that is safe, supportive, and affirming for the LGBTQ community in Birmingham and surrounding areas. Additionally, our goal is to raise awareness of the unique needs of this community and provide culturally sensitive training opportunities for health care professionals. Clinicians who would like to participate in this clinic will attend comprehensive training sessions by identified experts within the LGBTQ field from organizations such as the Magic City Acceptance Project and PFLAG Birmingham.

Programs and Services

• Outpatient treatment for LGBTQ identified adults, as well as, gender non-conforming children
• Outpatient assessment and treatment of substance use disorders
• Therapy services provided by psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists
• Letter of referral for hormones
• Individual psychotherapy including: supportive, psychodynamic and behavioral
• Cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders, depression, health concerns, insomnia, chronic pain, smoking cessation, sleep behavior disorders and ADHD
• Trauma-informed therapy
• Group therapy: structured ADHD and Dialectic-Behavioral Therapy Groups
• Outpatient substance abuse treatment

• Provides LGBTQ medical and mental health competency training for providers, medical students, clinical staff, as well as, the greater Birmingham community
• Trans Care Network participant working in partnership with community leaders to showcase the commitment to providing medical and mental health services to transgender individuals
• Is a stakeholder for the "B-Heard, Birmingham" Metro LGBTQ needs assessment. Supporting a needs assessment of the LGBTQ community in the Birmingham metro area, Jefferson, Walker, Blount, St. Clair, and Shelby counties to inform services and philanthropists for improvement in acceptance, affirmation, and appropriateness of services in the area of physical health, mental health, public safety, K-12 education, family support services and aging.
• Inclusion of gender identity, sex assigned at birth, preferred name and pronouns on all intake forms
• Accessible unisex restrooms
• UAB Medicine is recognized as a "Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality" by the Human Rights Campaign. To earn this designation, facilities must train staff in LGBT health care, have LGBT responsive policies, and disseminate those policies to the public and staff members. UAB Medicine is proud to maintain supportive policies related to  patient non-discrimination, visitation, and cultural sensitivty training.
