Welcome to the UAB Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program.

morganOne of the things most applicants notice when visiting our program is the excellent camaraderie of our residents. This has always been one of the distinguishing characteristics of our program and one of which we are proud. Birmingham is a great and very livable city for young physicians, and UAB Radiology produces strong, well trained and competent radiologists ready to take on whatever practice situation they desire at the end of residency. This positive experience is reflected in the fact that out of 184 accredited radiology residency programs in the nation, we were recently named as an Aunt Minnies 2014 semifinalist recognizing the “best and brightest in medical imaging”.

There are a number of reasons for this. Our department values its residents and places great importance on their training. Our teaching faculty provides progressive learning opportunities with graduated responsibilities in an environment of collegiality and camaraderie that lasts well beyond residency training. In that spirit, we are pleased to announce that construction is about to begin on our new Residents' Learning Center, a state-of-the-art educational facility that is being built with funds raised by contributions of our former residents as well as present trainees and faculty. To emphasize the importance of teaching, clinical faculty are recognized for their efforts based on evaluations by our residents in the highly coveted “Top Ten” awards that are presented every 6 months. Our training program offers a good balance between clinical duties, daily didactic lectures and radiology case conferences, and weekly multidisciplinary conferences and tumor boards. The clinical services at UAB are very busy and offer residents training in state of the art imaging modalities, comprehensively covering all eleven subspecialty areas of diagnostic imaging and interventional services. All of our residents actively engage in research under the supervision of a clinical or basic science faculty member, often leading to experience presenting at national meetings as well as the publication process. This past June we instituted a year-end celebration of all of our residents while focusing on the graduates, the UAB Radiology READY (Resident Research, Education, and Appreciation Day). Activities such as the Newcomer’s Party at the Birmingham Barons game, CAPTURED- a UAB Radiology photography contest, and periodic Alumni Socials help to enhance the collegial atmosphere in the department. Radiology is an ever-changing and exciting field, and training the next generation in Radiology is our mission*. We want the experience to be most educational and enjoyable for our residents. So, check us out. We think you will agree that this is a great place to learn Radiology.
