Stefanie Woodard, D.O., was named section chief for the breast imaging section, effective January 2025.

Woodard has served as the interim section chief for the breast imaging section since July 2023 and has done a fantastic job with the role. She is currently the director of the breast imaging resident rotation, director of breast MRI, lead interpreting physician, and associate professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine. Her roles have included associate scientist for UAB's Center for Clinical and Translational Science and associate program director for the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program.

Woodard received a Bachelor of Science from Mercer University and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her Diagnostic Radiology residency training at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where she then stayed to complete a breast imaging fellowship. After fellowship, Woodard joined Tristan Radiology Specialists where she spent a year in private practice with additional time as a clinical instructor at Hershey Medical Center.

Woodard has received awards such as the Educational Initiative Award and Distinguished Teaching Awards for Excellence in Resident Education. She has served as an assistant editor for the American Journal of Radiology and as an invited guest editor for the Journal of Osteopathic College of Radiology. She is a member of the Association of University Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI), and has served on committees like the RSNA Abstract Review and the SBI Mentorship Subcommittee.

At UAB, Woodard has directed courses using Virtual Reality for breast biopsy simulations, has been a part of the UAB HealthCare Explorers Program both as the deputy chair in 2021 and as chair in 2023. She has served on the Clinical Competency Committee, Program Evaluation Committee, Radiology Medical Student Education Committee and the Dean’s Council for Graduate Medical Education. She has served on the Medical Education Committee (MEC) in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine since 2018, chairing the clinical subcommittee since 2021. Dr. Woodard was a UAB Innovation Fellow in 2022-2023 and a member of the Health Educator Academy 2021-2023.

Woodard has been active in research, authoring or co-authoring over 40 publications and poster presentations. Her research has included various aspects of breast imaging, including AI in breast MRI and multiple projects involving a Virtual Reality breast biopsy system. She has also been an invited lecturer, presenting on topics ranging from MRI techniques to positioning in mammography at multiple institutions and national conferences. She has received grant funding including the Radiology Research Imaging Pilot Award and an investigator-initiated industry-funded grant for AI in breast MRI.
