Cheri L. Canon, M.D., FACR, FSAR, FAAWR, president, UA Health Services Foundation; chief physician executive, UAB Health System; professor emerita, UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Radiology; has been appointed president of the American Board of Radiology (ABR). Her appointment follows two years as president-elect and marks another milestone in her nearly 30-year career at the UAB.
In her time with UAB, Canon served as chair of the UAB Department of Radiology from 2011-2024, overseeing the growth of the department into a leader in clinical care and research. In May 2024, she became the president of the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation, P.C., and chief physician executive of the UAB Health System.
“I am deeply honored to assume the role of president of the American Board of Radiology, an organization that plays such a crucial role in ensuring the quality and integrity of our profession,” said Canon. “Throughout my career, I have been committed to advancing radiology and supporting the development of future generations of physicians. I look forward to helping lead the ABR in its mission to promote excellence in patient care and to uphold the high standards of our field in an ever-changing healthcare landscape.”
The ABR, a non-profit organization and one of the 24 specialty boards accredited by the American Board of Medical Specialties, certifies radiologists, radiation oncologists, and medical physicists based on strict educational, training, and professional criteria. The board’s mission is to protect the public by ensuring that radiologists maintain the highest levels of competence and ethical practice. As president of the ABR, Canon will provide strategic leadership for the board.
