Why I chose UAB: I learned to love UAB as an internal medicine resident. There is a culture among trainees at UAB that fosters a commitment to excellence and camaraderie. Coming from out of state, I also realized that Birmingham is a hidden jewel. It has just about every amenity of any large city - concerts, top notch local restaurants, craft breweries, an international airport, and high end shopping - while being small enough to be easily livable.
The rheumatology department is one of the largest in the country and has a high standing within the department of medicine at UAB. I have the chance to interact with attendings who are experts at the top of their respective fields within rheumatology and are also extremely approachable. I have the ability to engage in clinical research and see rare cases, while still becoming expert in the management of more common rheumatic diseases as well.
