Theatre UAB presents “Proof”
A brilliant mathematician suffers a debilitating mental breakdown, prompting his gifted but depressive daughter Catherine to leave her own studies to care for him. When a revolutionary mathematical theory is discovered among her father’s papers, Catherine speculates on the link between genius and madness and which legacy he will bequeath to her. David Auburn’s Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning play deftly intertwines family drama with a mystery less about prime numbers than the elusive nature of truth. Theatre UAB presents “Don’t Trifle with Love”
On a country estate, a trifling baron instigates a match between his niece and his son, who haven’t seen each other in 10 years. Having financed both of their educations, the baron feels it’s time for a payoff, only the course of true love never has run smooth. His plans are soon thwarted by a duplicitous, motley crew in this tragi-comedy of passion, jealousy and manipulation. Alfred de Musset wrote “Don’t Trifle with Love” after being spurned by authoress George Sand. Nagle Jackson has peppered his translation with enticing language and subtle double-entendres. Visiting Professor Frank Bradley from the American University in Cairo will direct, sponsored by the Jemison Visiting Professorship in the Humanities. “Don’t Trifle with Love” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7-10 and Nov. 14-17, with a 2 p.m. matinee Nov.18, in UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, Odess Theatre, 1200 10th Ave. South. Theatre UAB presents “Charley’s Aunt”
Oxford University student Charley Wykham and his roommate Jack desperately wish to propose to their sweethearts before they go abroad. Decorum dictates a chaperone, and who better than Charley’s Aunt Donna Lucia d'Alvadorez, widow of a Brazilian (where the nuts come from) millionaire? That is, until she cancels at the last minute. Not to be undone, the boys recruit undergraduate Lord Fancourt “Babs” Babberley, who is jolly good at amateur theatricals, to impersonate the absentee aunt, sparking a delightful misadventure of young love and outlandish deception. Brandon Thomas’s farce broke box-office records and has enjoyed countless stage and film adaptations. Theatre UAB’s edgy, enormously popular festival celebrates its 10th anniversary with a “greatest hits” collection of eight of the most notable crowd-pleasing short plays from the last decade. The festival is produced by Theatre UAB’s Lee Shackleford. Performances will happen at 7:30 p.m. March 11-15, in UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, Odess Theatre, 1200 10th Ave. South. Theatre UAB presents "Bat Boy: The Musical" (replacing “Dames at Sea”)
“Bat Boy: The Musical” features a book by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, with music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe. Ripped from the 1992 World Weekly News tabloid headline, “Bat Boy: The Musical” is both musical comedy/horror spoof and big-hearted satire on American prejudice. When a half-boy/half-bat creature is discovered in a cave near fictional Hope Falls, W. Va., a local veterinarian’s wife teaches him to act like a “normal” boy. However the citizens of Hope Falls are not so quick to accept Edgar the Bat Boy, prompting a chain of absurd situations and shocking revelations, all set to a peppy, melodic pop-rock score. “Bat Boy: The Musical” contains mature subject matter, comic gore/violence and sexual content. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. April 17-20 with at 2 p.m. matinee April 21, in UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, Sirote Theatre, 1200 10th Ave. South.
