“The HELMET Project,” a series of works by UAB Professor of Painting Gary Chapman, M.F.A., is scheduled for its first public installation Sept. 11-16, 2012, at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.
The 12 oil paintings, created by Chapman in 2011, have been temporarily installed in grand, stark, beautiful and provocative locations for the sole purpose of documentation. Chapman is collaborating with some of Alabama’s best-known photographers to create beautiful and intriguing images of the installations for a future book project.
For the first public installation, Chapman will lead a series of lectures and gallery talks Thursday, Sept. 11, with a public reception that evening at 5:30 p.m. The installation will include the 12 “HELMET” paintings, several photographs of select installations of the works, and three short films produced on the project. Admission to the museum is free.
Chapman’s “The HELMET Project” is also scheduled for two more Alabama exhibitions, at Spring Hill College in Mobile Oct. 1-26, and at The Wiregrass Museum of Art in Dothan in November 2013. To learn more about “The HELMET Project” visit Chapman’s website and blog, www.garychapmanart.com.
