VOCALOSITY, an all-new, fast-paced live concert featuring 10 dynamic voices, is coming to the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Feb. 9.
From the creative mind of artistic producer Deke Sharon (“Pitch Perfect,” “The Sing-Off”), VOCALOSITY takes a cappella to a whole new level. Performers will sing some of today’s chart-topping hits in brand-new arrangements; but no genre of music is off limits — from 10th century Gregorian chant and classic choral to barber shop quartet and doo-wop, all the way to The Beatles and Bruno Mars. Featuring movement and choreography, this exhilarating evening of song is appropriate for all ages.
Universal Music Classics released VOCALOSITY’s debut album Jan. 15, 2016, before the group embarked on a more than 30-city national tour. As part of its tour, each city is invited to host an online video contest for local a cappella groups, with the winner being selected by Sharon to perform as VOCALOSITY’s opening act in their city — a fantastic way to engage the local community and spread the joy of a cappella.
The show is set for 7 p.m. in the Alys Stephens Center’s Jemison Concert Hall. Tickets are $28, $38 and $48. ASC members receive $10 off. Buy four tickets for $30 and each additional ticket is $7.50. Call 205-975-2787 or visit www.AlysStephens.org.
UAB student tickets are $7.50 when purchased at the Alys Stephens Center Box Office. Faculty may purchase $25 tickets; a limited number of $25 tickets are available for each show. All UAB students, faculty and staff receive a 20 percent discount on single tickets.
One lucky a cappella group can perform as the opening act for VOCALOSITY when they come to UAB’s Alys Stephens Center. The winning group will also receive complimentary tickets to the performance. To enter, simply record your group singing a one- to two-minute musical arrangement of any contemporary song and upload to YouTube. Email the link to info@vocalosityontour.com. The submission deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 31. For questions regarding the contest, email Tiffany Clemons at clemonst@uab.edu.
Three finalists will be chosen, and their videos will be judged by the VOCALOSITY creative team. Performances will be limited to five minutes, and performance song selection must be approved by VOCALOSITY in advance. The winner will be announced one week prior to the performance, on Friday, Feb. 3. UPDATE: Vestavia Hills High School's a cappella pop ensemble, Just Singin,' has been named the competition winner and will open for VOCALOSITY at 7 p.m.
