students, faculty and staff will serve the Greater Birmingham community Monday, Jan. 21, by volunteering for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
MLK Jr. Day of Service is an annual event that honors King’s memory through community outreach efforts. Orchestrated by the UAB Leadership and Service Council, a student-led campus organization, interested participants will spend the national holiday volunteering at various locations around Birmingham through Hands-On Birmingham. This year the MLK Jr. Day of Service will kick off the UAB Benevolent Fund's 50 Acts of Service for UAB's 50th anniversary.
Participants will meet for registration at 11:30 a.m. at the UAB Campus Recreation Center. Each student will be assigned a location upon registration based on a first-come, first-served basis. Free lunch will be offered to all volunteers. At 12:30 p.m., volunteers will travel to their service locations and work until 4 p.m.
Locations include the Railroad Park, The Red Barn, South H Rehab, Birmingham Nursing and Rehab, The Birmingham Education Foundation, Vulcan Park and Museum, neighborhood cleanups in Glen Iris, Docena, Bush Hills and Greater Shiloh, Bush Hills Community Garden, Red Mountain Park, SIMS Ecoscape, UAB Sustainability, and more. An estimated 400-500 volunteers are expected to participate.
The Leadership and Service Council at UAB is a student-led organization that coordinates biannual community outreach days and monthly service projects, conducts ongoing volunteer activities, and houses the Social Change and the Civic Engagement committees.
