College students in Alabama can join a day of workshops on social justice advocacy work at the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Friday, Jan. 24.
This unique student-led gathering aims to address the challenges and advantages of doing social justice advocacy work on Alabama college campuses. Through this event, students will have the opportunity to experience various workshops focused on preparing, building community and creating change. Students will share their experiences and work through session presentations in workshops, panels and more.
Now in its fourth year, the Organized Radical Collegiate Activism gathering was formerly known as the Social Justice Conference. It is presented by Student and Multicultural Diversity Programs.
Students will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of social justice issues and what they can do to get involved on their campuses. ORCA will also highlight that social justice has no boundaries, meaning activism can be done in a variety of different ways and can pertain to a variety of different issues. Students will leave inspired to create change on their campus and ignite inclusivity. The keynote speaker will be Bushra Amiwala, the youngest Muslim elected-official in the country.
All current Alabama undergraduate, graduate and professional students are eligible to register and attend. There is no cost for this conference; breakfast and lunch will be provided. Whether students want to start or grow in campus advocacy, the conference offers opportunities to gain skills, knowledge and resources.
