UAB graduate students will work as yearlong service partners to implement self-developed projects dedicated to improving the health of vulnerable people.
(Photo by: Steve Wood)The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship of Alabama has announced the community site partners of the incoming 2021 Fellows class, which includes 11 graduate students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The Alabama Schweitzer Chapter was founded in 2015 and joined a national network of Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Chapters across the United States. ASF chapters are dedicated to improving the health of vulnerable people by developing a corps of emerging professionals who enter the workforce with the skills and commitment necessary to address unmet health needs.
“The 2021 Fellows have already demonstrated humility and adaptability as they have completed needs assessments and interviews with stakeholders closest to these community needs,” said Kristin Boggs, ASF executive director. “We are thankful to our site partners, who welcome in our Fellows and provide mentorship throughout the year. I am hopeful that the collaborative nature of these projects will continue to grow as the year progresses.”

- Carolyn Grace Griffin, Auburn University
- Henry Kendrick, UAB
- Ibukun Afon, University of Alabama
- Tanya Correya, UAB
- Matthew Hudson, who is also a graduate student in the Collat School of Business, UAB
- Joia Pfeiffer, UAB
- Grace Menzies, UAB
- Shanquela Williams, UAB and masters from University of Houston
The 2021 Alabama Schweitzer Fellows class has been developing its project plans with the assistance of Boggs since March 2021. By April 2022, the Fellows will have dedicated 200 hours to plan, implement, evaluate and develop a sustainability plan for their projects. Descriptions of their projects are available here.
