According to the National Brain Tumor Society, there are more than 100 different types of primary brain tumors, and with each come its own symptoms, treatments and outcomes. While research for treatments is underway, it is predicated that more than 94,000 Americans will be diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2023.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham aims to educate and spread awareness with resources throughout the month of May.
Southeastern brain tumor research meeting
Researchers from across the Southeast who focus on adult and pediatric brain tumors will join together at the Hill Student Center on Thursday, May 18. The meeting will provide opportunities for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows to develop critical professional skills in a setting that models national scientific meetings.

FamilyStrong brain tumor patient and caregiver meeting
In collaboration with the American Brain Tumor Association, the UAB FamilyStrong meeting for patients with brain tumors and their caregivers will be held Friday, May 19, at 10 a.m. in the Hill Student Center.

10th annual Blazer Bolt for Brain Cancer
The 10th annual Blazer Bolt for Brain Cancer 5K and fun run will be Saturday, May 20, at Rail Road Park benefiting brain cancer research at UAB’s Division of Neuro Oncology and Children’s of Alabama.
A survivor’s walk will begin at 9:20 a.m., followed by the 5K at 8 a.m. and the fun run at 9 a.m. The event will also include a virtual option. Proceeds raised will further research of adult and pediatric brain cancer as well as sponsor patient support services.
