University of Alabama at Birmingham on Friday, Sept. 1. UAB currently has real estate contracts on the Daniel Building, located at 15 20th St. South, and a medical office building located at 1715 11th Ave. South.
The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees approved two real estate transactions for the“UAB continues to strategically grow our campus through new facilities, renovations and real estate acquisitions to enhance the overall experience of our students, employees and patients,” said UAB President Ray L. Watts. “This is an exciting time for our institution to gain access to these campus-contiguous spaces as we keep pace with grown opportunities across every pillar of our mission and our strategic plan.”
The 19-story Daniel Building will be purchased by the UAB Medicine Enterprise for $16 million with a proposed closing by the end of September. The office building includes approximately 316,000 square feet of office space and is conveniently located on 20th Street South, only a few blocks from The Kirklin Clinic, The Whitaker Building and the Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine’s Lyons-Harrison Faculty Office Tower, as well as other UAB Hospital buildings.
“The office space offers the opportunity to locate and consolidate administrative and support services and provide space to accommodate UAB Medicine’s growing enterprise,” said Dawn Bulgarella, CEO of the UAB Health System and CEO of the UAB/Ascension St. Vincent’s Alliance. “Its proximity to UAB Medicine facilities will provide opportunities to expand clinical care facilities in alignment with the UAB Medicine Facility Master Plan.”
The building includes a 390-space parking deck. An adjacent surface parking area offers an additional 644 parking spaces, which will be leased from Norfolk Southern.
Also, the university is acquiring a single-story, 6,100 square foot medical office building on the southern edge of campus. The half-acre lot that includes the building and adjacent parking will be purchased for $1.15 million. The university plans for future redevelopment of the property within the scope of the long-range master plan.
