This beard-growing competition is an annual event that encourages individuals to grow out their facial hair for the month of November to promote educational awareness on men’s health. Teams will raise funds for UAB’s Program for Personalized Prostate Cancer Care and may consist of UAB students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the Birmingham community.

While sparking conversations about the importance of men’s health awareness, the “Stubble To Support Men’s Health” campaign will focus notably on motivating prostate cancer screenings.

Soroush Rais-Bahrami, M.D., professor in the Department of Urology and co-director of the UAB Program for Personalized Prostate Cancer Care, says this campaign is important in the overall education of men’s health issues.

“The importance of research and innovation in the arena of prostate cancer is vital and will be fueled by the fundraising efforts that accompany this monthlong campaign,” Rais-Bahrami said.

Rais-Bahrami says it presents the opportunity for individuals to have effective dialogues about men’s health with their loved ones.

“Knowing family history and risk factors is key, as well as having thorough discussions with health care providers about age-appropriate screening to catch prostate cancer early while it is treatable with high likelihood of cure.”

To donate or join an existing team, please visit the campaign’s official website here. Those interested in forming their own team may reach out to UAB Annual Giving at annualgiving@uab.edu.

On Wednesday, Nov. 27 from 5 to 9 p.m., the community is invited to "Beer and Bingo" at Trim Tab Brewing Co.! One dollar of every "featured" beer purchased will go directly to the UAB Program for Personalized Prostate Cancer Care. Bingo starts at 7 p.m.
