The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Jefferson County, and Governor Ivey has issued a State of Emergency for Alabama. UAB will have operational changes Friday, Jan. 10. Unless otherwise communicated, normal operations are expected Saturday, Jan. 11.
University of Alabama at Birmingham — university operations
- There are no classes, and non-essential university events/activities are canceled/closed Friday.
The following provides information on the operations schedule for UAB Health System entities (including UAB St. Vincent’s, UAB Medical West and Cooper Green Mercy Health Services) for Friday, Jan. 10:
UAB Hospital
- UAB Hospital and all UAB Emergency Departments — including the UAB Hospital-The Gardendale Freestanding Emergency Department — never close.
- All UAB Hospital scheduled surgeries and Heart and Vascular Center procedures will proceed as planned unless patients already rescheduled with their provider.
- Patients scheduled for surgery on Friday should arrive at their designated times.
- Please travel safely and contact your surgical office if you have any concerns.
UAB Hospital-Highlands
- All scheduled surgeries will proceed as planned unless patients already rescheduled with their provider.

UAB Urgent Care
- UAB Medicine Urgent Care, located at 125 20th Street South, is closed and will reopen on Saturday.
UAB Dentistry
- Current UAB Dentistry patients of record with dental emergencies during this closure should follow the instructions listed in the after-hours care section of the Emergency Care page.
UAB School of Optometry Clinic
- The UAB School of Optometry Clinic will be closed on Friday and appointments rescheduled.
- Patients of record in need of emergency care can contact UAB Eye Care’s on-call doctor by calling our main line at 205-975-2020.
- Please note that if travel to the clinic is impossible, a doctor will not be available to provide in-person assistance until weather conditions improve.
UAB Callahan
- UAB Callahan Eye Hospital and Eye Emergency Department never close.
- Patients scheduled for elective surgery Friday, Jan. 10, will be rescheduled.
- All clinics located at 1720 University Boulevard and Callahan satellite clinics (Cahaba River, Children’s South, Gardendale, Hoover, Oneonta, Pelham, Trussville, Tuscaloosa and Vestavia) are closed and will reopen Monday. Appointments will be rescheduled.
UAB St. Vincent’s Hospital
- UAB St. Vincent’s Hospital and all UAB St. Vincent’s Emergency Departments never close.

UAB St. Vincent’s East and Freestanding Emergency Department
- UAB St. Vincent’s East and its Emergency Department never close.
