Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States with one in four deaths caused by heart disease each year. However, the disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions.
Throughout the month of February, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, UAB Medicine, and Heart and Vascular Services will raise awareness about heart disease and ways to help prevent it as part of American Heart Month with many events, including four communitywide initiatives.
- Friday, Feb. 6, Wear Red Day – Everyone is encouraged to raise awareness of heart disease in women by wearing red on National Wear Red Day.
- Friday, Feb. 13, Love Your Heart – Visit the UAB Heart and Vascular Services information table on the second floor of The Kirklin Clinic and show your heart a little love. Heart-health information and giveaways will be available from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
- Friday, Feb. 20, Brown Bag Lunch and Learn – Bring your lunch and listen to UAB Heart and Vascular Services nurse practitioner Lisa Findley share heart-healthy tips. The event will be from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium. Complimentary drinks and dessert will be provided by the Comprehensive Cardiovascular Center.
- Friday, Feb. 27, Heart-Healthy Recipe Tasting – UAB’s culinary team will prepare delicious recipes from UAB EatRight for sampling in the second-floor atrium of the North Pavilion. A new UAB Heart and Vascular Services recipe booklet also will be available to take home. The event is from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
