Nathan LeBrassuerNathan LeBrassuerThe UAB Nathan Shock Center is bringing experts in from across the country to lecture on topics related to the basic biology of aging.

The aging seminar series will be open to the public and will take place once a month from January to April.

The series will kick off Wednesday, Jan. 20, with a discussion on “Diet, Exercise and the Biology of Aging” by Nathan LeBrassuer, Ph.D.

LeBrassuer, an assistant professor of physiology at the Mayo Clinic’s Rochester, Minnesota, location, studies the genes and signaling pathways influencing skeletal muscle growth and metabolism, and how their manipulation — by genetic alteration, diet, drugs or exercise — affects these physiological processes.

This first seminar of the series will take place from 12-1 p.m. Jan. 20 in Room 235 of UAB’s Learning Resource Center at 1714 Ninth Ave. S.

The seminar series is a central part of the Nathan Shock Center’s mission to foster leadership in the pursuit of basic research into the biology of aging. UAB was named one of the country’s six Nathan Shock Centers for Excellence by the National Institutes of Health’s Institute on Aging in 2015.
