Chief Communications Officer, Public Relations 

As chief communications officer for the University of Alabama at Birmingham and UAB Medicine, Bakken leads teams that set and execute internal and external communications strategy. Prior to joining UAB in 2012, Bakken spent a decade working with a diverse client base at two full-service communications firms. Bakken spent eight years in Nashville at McNeely Pigott and Fox – one of the largest PR firms in the Southeast – prior to launching Peritus Public Relations in Birmingham in 2010. Bakken has served on the board of the Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations, is accredited by the Public Relations Society of America and has been a Birmingham Business Journal Top 40 Under 40 honoree.

A UAB School of Nursing professor will edit a new online nursing journal.
Souraya Sidani, Ph.D., professor at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University, will present the 20th Dr. Jean A. Kelley Endowed Lectureship Sept. 16.
Aaron Davis, M.A., a psychology doctoral candidate, will have her work featured in Progress Notes.

Brian Mareno of Helena, a senior in the UAB School of Engineering, is the recipient of the Bruce Tucker Memorial Scholarship from the Mississippi Valley branch of the Associated General Contractors of America.

The UAB Fishing Club will compete for $50,000 worth of scholarships and prizes in the National Guard FLW College Fishing Regional Championship Sept. 8-10 on Alabama's Lake Harding.
