One-night-only exhibition Aug. 31 features works by UAB art, math alumna

“Rachel M. Ejem: Intersections” features Ejem’s recent research using mixed-media drawings and installation to investigate mathematical and metaphorical ideas of intersection.

Rachel Ejem ConvergenceRachel Ejem, "Convergence"Works by recent University of Alabama at Birmingham Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate Rachel M. Ejem will be on exhibition for one night only Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Presented by the College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of Art and Art History, the exhibition of installation and works on paper will take place in the UAB DAAH Project Space at 5 p.m.

The UAB DAAH Project Space is located on the ground floor of the Humanities Building, 900 13th St. South.

“Rachel M. Ejem: Intersections” features Ejem’s recent research using mixed-media drawings and installation to investigate mathematical and metaphorical ideas of intersection.

“The intersection is a common notation in mathematics (the intersection point of two or more lines), but it also has a double meaning,” Ejem said. “It is both inclusive and exclusive — intersections cut and divide by passing through or across, yet in geometry intersections hold one or more points in common.”

Ejem, who graduated in 2016, is a native of Birmingham and holds Bachelor of Science, Master of Sciences and BFA degrees from UAB. She is both a mathematician and an artist and her mixed-media drawings bridge the gap between humanities and science. Ejem equates art to math, and by combining the fields Ejem creates visual solutions that suggest problem-solving methods alongside personal, visual narratives that touch universal themes of vulnerability and endurance, destruction and repair.

Project Space is an adaptive space that provides an alternative platform for UAB students, faculty and community to engage teaching, research, public service and visual art practices.
