Helen Krontiras, M.D. is a professor of surgery at UAB and division director of the Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery. In 2021, she became the Director of Clinical Affairs for the O’Neal Cancer Service Line. A native of Alabama, Dr. Krontiras attended Birmingham-Southern College and UAB School of Medicine. After general surgery residency, also at UAB, she completed a fellowship in Breast Surgery at Northwestern. Since entering academic practice in 2001, she has maintained an active surgical practice and has been engaged in the education of medical students and residents on a daily basis. She is an associate scientist with the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and her primary research interests are in prevention and risk assessment of breast cancer, disparity in cancer care, and outcomes of breast cancer treatment. In her role as Associate Chief Medical Officer for Ambulatory Quality and Patient Safety for UAB Medicine, she participates in quality improvement and quality assurance activities related to delivery of high quality and cost-effective care.
