UAB Medicine ’s O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at Acton Road has reopened to patients in the community with expanded specialty care services, providing the same world-renowned, advanced cancer treatment offered at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in downtown Birmingham, just closer to home.
The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at Acton Road is unique, with its new subspecialized programs led by care teams of expert doctors, pharmacists, researchers and more, yet with the same level of technology and resources patients expect from UAB.
As National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at Acton Road’s expanded access offers new services, as it continues to offer the existing leading-edge medical oncology, infusion therapy and radiation oncology services, including:
- Urology Oncology Clinic for new prostate and bladder cancer patients
- Gastrointestinal Surgery Clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of colon, rectal, anal and small intestinal cancers and benign and malignant GI tumors
- Breast Health Clinic for the diagnosis of new breast problems, sick work-ins and availability of follow-ups
- Cardio-Oncology Clinic for cancer patients at risk of heart disease or with existing heart disease, cancer patients benefiting from specialized cardiology evaluation, and treatment-related cardio-toxicity
“At the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at Acton Road, we are bringing the highest-quality cancer care closer to home while maintaining access to comprehensive services and potentially disease-altering clinical trials that only a top 25 cancer program can offer,” said Barry Sleckman, M.D., Ph.D., director of UAB’s O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center.
New offerings such as cardio-oncology, a multidisciplinary field focusing on the management and prevention of cardiovascular complications in cancer patients and survivors, will be valuable for the community. The main goal of the program is to identify patients with cancer who may be at an increased risk for cancer-treatment-related cardiac problems.
For patients with other types of cancer, the expanded services will minimize the locations they may have to visit for different appointment needs, including follow-up appointments.
Located off I-65, the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at Acton Road provides convenient access to the community, as well as those who may need to travel to Birmingham to receive care.
“We realize that a cancer diagnosis is life-changing, and it is a top priority at the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB to provide cutting-edge cancer care that is also convenient and comfortable for our patients,” Sleckman said.
