Patients experiencing vaginal infections now have a new option and location for treatment.
The new UAB Vaginitis Clinic provides care for patients with complicated vaginal infections such as recurrent/refractory bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, and vaginal yeast infections. It is located in the UAB Infectious Diseases Clinic on the fifth floor at UAB Highlands.
“This new clinic is important because vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis and vaginal yeast infections are extremely common among women,” said Christina Muzny, M.D., associate professor with UAB’s Division of Infectious Diseases. “At times, their symptoms may overlap and/or women may have more than one infection at the same time, thus, appropriate diagnosis and treatment are paramount.”
Muzny added that a proportion of women with vaginal infections have persistent or recurring infection, which can be more difficult to treat than an initial infection.

“For example, more than 60 percent of women treated for BV experience recurrent infection within a six-month time frame after treatment,” Muzny said. “We are opening this clinic for accurate screening, diagnosis and treatment of these infections and will offer state-of-the-art diagnostic testing as well as treatments, per the upcoming 2021 CDC Sexually Transmitted Infections Treatment Guidelines.
