The UAB School of Medicine is one of three finalists for the 2011 Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Service from the Association of American Medical Colleges. The award honors member institutions with a longstanding, major institutional commitment to addressing community needs and recognizes exceptional programs that exceed the traditional role of academic medicine and to reach communities whose needs are unmet through the traditional health-delivery system.
Among UAB programs cited in the nomination include the Minority Health and Research Center, Center for Community Outreach Development, Equal Access Birmingham free medical clinics run by medical students, Suits 4 Success and the UAB Benevolent Fund.
The other finalists are Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The award will be bestowed Nov. 5, following site visits to the three finalists.
