Equal Access Birmingham, a UAB medical student group, will host a free public health screening at the Church of the Reconciler from 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012. The screening is open to all community members as part of EAB’s goal to address the needs of the locally underserved population in the Birmingham area and provide health-care education.
Screenings will include measurements of body mass index, blood pressure and blood glucose levels. Participants also will receive oral hygiene screenings and skin condition assessments. Medical students will explain the meaning of test results, discuss participants’ risk factors for particular conditions, and offer information on resources for improving overall health. The tests, valued at more than $150, are provided free to the community to help individuals identify particular health risk factors that may require further medical attention. Church of the Reconciler is located at 112 14th St. North.
EAB also staffs a free acute-care clinic every Wednesday night from 4:30-7 p.m. at the M-POWER Ministries building in Avondale, providing medical care for children and adults at no charge. No appointments are necessary.
EAB is a student-run initiative in the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education of the UAB School of Medicine that seeks to provide health-care access to those in need within the Birmingham community, promote health education, and raise awareness of local health disparities through the efforts of medical students and various partnerships.
