UAB Hospital and UAB Medicine have received top honors from Becker’s Healthcare, and the hospital, with 1,118 beds, has also been formally listed as the 18th-largest hospital in the United States. Becker’s Healthcare is a leading source of business and legal information for the health care industry.
Becker’s Hospital Review, the organization’s flagship publication, lists UAB Hospital as one of the “100 Great Hospitals in America” and names UAB Medicine as “One of the 150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare.”
According to the Becker’s website, each of the top 100 hospitals has a rich history, strong credentials and a growing focus on how to best care for patients in an era of reform. These organizations have played host to some of the greatest medical advancements in U.S. health care history, and they are also the bastions of their respective communities — serving the roles of academic hubs or local mainstays.
The website calls UAB Hospital the centerpiece of the UAB Health System and notes that it is the largest academic medical center in Alabama and the first Magnet-designated hospital in Alabama. The site reports that more than 290 UAB physicians across 55 specialties were recently named to the 2012 list of the “Best Doctors in America.”

The site further lauds the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, and highlights UAB’s designation as only adult Level I trauma center in Alabama and one of the only Level IV neonatal intensive care units in the South. The site also states that the UAB Callahan Eye Hospital is the nation’s first Level I ocular trauma center, and treats 2,200 people every year for eye trauma.
Becker’s Healthcare also named UAB Medicine as one of the “150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare” for 2014.
The 2014 list was expanded to include health care providers — medical groups, ambulatory surgery centers, hospitals and health systems — along with other types of health care-specific companies, such as consulting firms, health IT vendors, medical societies and more.
UAB Medicine is one of the largest employers in Alabama, with more than 16,000 employees. The system has been named Birmingham Business Journal’s Healthiest Employer and received the American Heart Association Gold Level Fit-Friendly Award.
Additional benefits cited by the review include employee access to fresh produce on the job through the on-site daily FarmStand, available March through November. A concierge service is available to employees for dry cleaning, car washes, oil changes, gift wrapping, pet sitting and more. Employees experiencing a financial crisis or other emergency also have access to the UAB Benevolent Fund Emergency Assistance Program.
The list was developed through nominations and editorial research, and the 150 organizations were chosen for their robust benefits, wellness initiatives, commitment to diversity and inclusion, professional development opportunities, and work environments that promote employee satisfaction and work-life balance.
