University of Alabama at Birmingham Professor Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, the Webb Endowed Chair of Nutrition Sciences, has been selected to receive the 2018 Mary P. Huddleson Award.
She is being honored for her article, “Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of a Home Vegetable Gardening Intervention among Older Cancer Survivors Shows Feasibility, Satisfaction, and Promise in Improving Vegetable and Fruit Consumption, Reassurance of Worth, and the Trajectory of Central Adipos,” which was published in the April 2018 issue of the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
The Huddleson Award recognizes an Academy member and registered dietitian who has published an exceptional paper in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics during the 2018 calendar year. The award is named in honor of Mary P. Huddleson in appreciation for her outstanding contributions to the scientific literature in nutrition and dietetics throughout her 19 years as editor of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.
Demark-Wahnefried, who serves as the associate director for Cancer Prevention and Control at the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB, has experienced particular success in the delivery of home-based lifestyle interventions among cancer survivors, where she has led and continues to lead a number of NIH-funded trials aimed at improving the diet and exercise behavior of cancer survivors.
Demark-Wahnefried will be honored at the 2019 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo in Philadelphia in October.
