University of Alabama at BirminghamHannah2Hannah Bae senior Hannah Bae has been selected to serve as a founding member of the newly formed subcommittee on diversity and inclusion for the Public Relations Student Society of America

As a #PRoud Council member, Bae will work on key diversity and inclusion initiatives for the organization, which represents more than 10,000 students and advisers organized in more than 300 chapters across the United States, Argentina, Colombia and Peru.

“This is the first time a UAB student has been chosen to serve in this capacity for this organization,” said Jacquelyn S. Shaia, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of the Public Relations Program in UAB’s College of Arts and Sciences. “Recognition of our students and participation in national activities help establish a national presence for this small but award-winning program, as well as offer invaluable experience and insight into practice of the field of public relations. Hannah is an outstanding student, and I know she will represent UAB well.”

Bae, who is from Vestavia Hills, Alabama, is the immediate past president of UAB’s chapter of PRSSA, a fourth-year student in the UAB Honors College University Honors Program and an active student leader in UAB Student Multicultural and Diversity Programs. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communication with a concentration in public relations and a minor in public health, as well as a Master of Public Health degree in health care organization and policy.

“PRSSA has facilitated so much of my academic and professional growth, and I am incredibly honored to be serving as one of this subcommittee’s founding members,” Bae said. “#PRoud Council’s formation is a valuable next step in committing to diversity and inclusion in the PR industry. I hope our work will help contribute to greater representation, belonging and equity to foster a more welcoming community for underrepresented students.”
