Sarah Owens, a graduate student in the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Engineering Management program, is a recipient of the Alabama Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Bridge to Doctorate Fellowship.
The ALSAMP program will allow Owens to enhance her academic career, develop her professional engineering skills, and cover the cost of both her tuition and fees.
Owens says, now that she is in the program, she can focus on her studies and research without worrying about finances.
During the program, Owens will work with her mentor, Abidin Yildrim, Ph.D., assistant professor in UAB's School of Engineering, by attending workshops and seminars and participate in research presentation opportunities.
“The program’s goal is to help bridge the gap between an undergraduate degree and potentially receiving a Ph.D.,” Owens said. “After completing the Master of Science in Engineering Management program, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary engineering. I would like to cover residential assistive technology, assistive technology for mobility impairments and other assistive technology devices that may benefit those with disabilities.
