Ashraf F. Fouad, DDS, professor and chair of the Department of Endodontics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry, has been selected to serve as a member of the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs.

“This appointment is an honor and privilege for me,” Fouad said. “I hope to represent my specialty and the UAB School of Dentistry to the best of my ability in identifying current research and practice needs in dentistry, reviewing and approving new materials and technologies for the treatment of our patients, and establishing standards for testing and evaluation of new approaches in dental care.”

The CSA provides information on a broad range of critical scientific issues of interest to the dental profession and the public. The council also gives guidance to the science staff in the ADA Seal of Acceptance Program, the Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry, the Center for Scientific Information, the Center for Research and Standards, and the Center for Product Evaluations. Members are selected based on their scientific knowledge and application, clinical or basic research expertise, and scientific analysis and communication.

“My appointment on the CSA will help me gain firsthand knowledge of current and future developments and challenges in this industry,” Fouad said.

Fouad’s appointment will continue UAB’s representation on the council. Previously, School of Dentistry associate professor Mia Geisinger, DDS, served on this council.

As a member of CSA, Fouad will impact dental patients nationwide by facilitating the discovery of novel materials and technologies, as well as the development of new evidence-based approaches to treatment.
