graduate student Raiful Hasan received second place at the 2022 International Conference on Digital Health student research competition for his study looking at pedestrian safety through Bluetooth beacon-based technology.
“I am honored to receive this award as it recognizes our research on context-aware intervention systems that have the potential to improve pedestrians’ safety by reducing accidents,” he said. “I am grateful to the selection committee for recognizing our work and look forward to continuing research in digital health in the future.”
The winning paper, “i-Hub: A Context-aware Intervention System for Distracted Pedestrians Using Urban Sensing,” is based on his doctoral research and was co-written by his advisor, Ragib Hasan, Ph.D., associate professor in the UAB College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Computer Science.
“Raiful’s Ph.D. research under my supervision applies cutting-edge smart city technology to solve a very important real-life problem that impacts human lives. His Bluetooth beacon-based solution is simple yet elegant and can be deployed to our cities at a low cost in order to prevent pedestrian deaths from accidents,” said Ragib Hasan. “This award is a well-deserved recognition from the computer science community of the high quality and impact of the work to our society.”
The Dhaka, Bangladesh, native will graduate in the spring 2023 commencement ceremony and plans to pursue a research career in academia or an industry after graduation.
