Dawn Bulgarella, chief executive officer of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System and UAB/Ascension St. Vincent’s Alliance, was recently elected president of the Birmingham Regional Council of the Alabama Hospital Association. The election took place at the association’s recent annual meeting.

“The regional hospital councils offer a crucial platform for hospital leaders to network and share best practices, which is incredibly valuable in our evolving health care landscape,” said Donald E. Williamson, M.D., president of AlaHA. “It is no surprise that a leader like Dawn was elected to serve her region in this capacity.”

Bulgarella is responsible for combined annual budgets of more than $5 billion.

In addition to her service with AlaHA, Bulgarella mentors women in health care, serves on numerous health care boards, and routinely speaks about health care finance and leadership. She participated in Class XXXI of Leadership Alabama and was named one of the Top Birmingham Women by the Birmingham Business Journal in 2021. She has been listed in the Who’s Who in Birmingham Healthcare annually since 2015.

Bulgarella earned a Bachelor of Science degree in commerce and business administration from the University of Alabama and a Master of Science degree in health administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Founded in 1921, the Alabama Hospital Association is a statewide trade organization dedicated to assisting member hospitals in effectively serving Alabama’s health care needs through advocacy, representation, education and service.
