2016 OC best online masters in early childhood education sealThe University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Education’s online early childhood and elementary education master’s program has been ranked among the best in the country by OnlineColleges.net.

The website ranked the top 23 programs in the United States for 2016 based on academic quality, online offerings, student experience, and cost and student aid support. The UAB School of Education program landed at No. 4 with an in-state tuition cost of $7,206 and out-of-state tuition cost at $16,398, the lowest of the top five ranked institutions.

“Like all of our academic offerings, the online master’s in early childhood and elementary education program is designed to guide educators in meeting the evolving needs of learners within today’s rapidly changing society,” said Dean Deborah L. Voltz, Ed.D. “This online instruction ensures that our quality program is available to students unable to come to campus during traditional class hours and those who do not reside in the state of Alabama.”

With 18 courses for the program available online, students can specialize in early childhood education or elementary education or choose a dual focus. Courses that make up the curriculum include language development, current issues in education and advanced early childhood curriculum. Upon completion of all program requirements, students are eligible for Alabama Class A teaching certification in their chosen field.

Students who go on to become professionals specializing in early childhood education are responsible for guiding the education and development of young children from birth to age 8. The online master’s program allows prospective educators to complete coursework in theoretical concepts virtually while pursuing required field training in a classroom or other professional setting close to their homes. Course assignments are completed through the Canvas platform, with numerous services available to support distance learners; students may access online tutoring, Web-based labs, webinars and student counseling through the SREB electronic campus, the Canvas Help Center, and the UAB Division of eLearning and Professional Studies.

Through theories on child development, developmental reading, primary math methods, teaching pedagogy, classroom management and other concepts, the program produces highly qualified students who go on to become preschool, kindergarten and elementary school teachers.

The UAB School of Education offers six online master’s degree programs in areas that include reading education, physical education, and health and community education.
