BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Professor Deborah J. Wiebe, Ph.D., a psychologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, has been selected to receive the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Psychology’s Distinguished Psychology Alumnus Award for 2007.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Professor Deborah J. Wiebe, Ph.D., a psychologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, has been selected to receive the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Psychology’s Distinguished Psychology Alumnus Award for 2007.

Wiebe will be honored during a ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in UAB Campbell Hall, Room 327, 1300 University Blvd. During the event, she will present her lecture, “Parent-Child Transactions in Diabetes Management Across Adolescence.” Call the UAB Department of Psychology at 205-934-3850 for more details.

The UAB Distinguished Psychology Alumnus Award was created to recognize alumni of the Department of Psychology for their professional achievements, exceptional human qualities and contributions to the university and society.

Wiebe is a professor of health psychology. She holds joint appointments in the UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and in the university’s School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences. Wiebe’s research focuses on understanding how people cope with acute and chronic illnesses, diabetes self-management and on how the experience of chronic illness becomes incorporated into an individual’s self-perception.

Wiebe earned her master’s degree in medical psychology from UAB in 1985. She later earned a master’s degree in public health and a doctorate in medical psychology from UAB in 1987 and 1988 respectively.

Wiebe has published articles in prestigious journals, including the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, the Journal of Pediatric Psychology and Health Psychology.
