University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Robert L. Goldenberg, M.D., was appointed professor emeritus by the University of Alabama Board of Trustees during its Nov. 9 meeting.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Robert L. Goldenberg, M.D., was appointed professor emeritus by the University of Alabama Board of Trustees during its Nov. 9 meeting.

The board recognized Goldenberg for his 30 years of service to UAB. Since joining the faculty in 1976, Goldenberg has held a number of positions, including director of the UAB Center for Women’s Reproductive Health, director of the UAB Center for Obstetric Research, chairman of the UAB Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Charles E. Flowers Endowed Chair in the UAB Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Goldenberg has distinguished himself through extensive public service work, including the Children’s Defense Fund, Child Health Advisory Panel for the Congress of the United States and U.S. Chairperson of the US-India Collaboration on Maternal Child Health Research. He also was director of obstetrical services, Cooper Green Mercy Hospital, in Birmingham, from 1986 to 1989.

Goldenberg also holds membership in several professional and scholarly organizations, including the American Association for Maternal and Neonatal Health, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Public Health Association, National Perinatal Association and Gorgas Memorial Institute of Tropical and Preventive Medicine.

Goldenberg earned his bachelor’s degree from Colombia University in 1964 and his M.D. from Duke University in 1968. He completed his internship in obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University and his residency at Colombia and Yale universities.
