BIRMINGHAM, AL — The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and FOX6 WBRC have embarked on a yearlong partnership to reach television viewers in Alabama with the latest information on cancer. The collaboration, which features news segments about cancer-related topics, call-in panels and other outreach efforts, is the first of its kind for the Cancer Center and is expected to reach tens of thousands of viewers throughout Alabama.
The partnership will launch February 22 with a news segment introducing viewers to the Cancer Center. Each month, FOX6 WBRC will feature two cancer-related stories by anchor and health reporter Devon Walsh. Stories, designed to bring the best in consumer news and emerging research, will spotlight Cancer Center physicians and scientists, as well as cancer survivors. Future topics include colorectal cancer, oral cancer, cancer survivorship and skin cancer.
Dennis Leonard, FOX6 general manager, said, "We have all felt the impact of cancer in our lives, and our year-long collaboration with the Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB will focus on the humanity of the disease and medicine.
“At FOX6, we hope to encourage Alabamians to have regular checkups, to not ignore cancer warning signs and to realize that in our own backyard, we have a beacon of hope for the treatment, research and ultimately the cure for cancer," Leonard added.
Acting Cancer Center Director Peter Emanuel, M.D, said, “We are so appreciative of the management of FOX6 WBRC committing to this major educational endeavor. Through the station’s support, thousands of Alabamians will learn about the progress we are making at the Cancer Center, and about the treatment options available to them right here in Birmingham.”
In addition to monthly news reports, viewers will be directed to additional educational efforts, including a special FOX6 WBRC page on the Cancer Center Web site (www.ccc.uab.edu). This page will contain stories related to topics that are covered, as well as interactive quizzes, videos and information about how to make an appointment with a Cancer Center physician. Viewers also will be able to learn about upcoming cancer screenings, support groups and the full range of cancer-related services at UAB.
